How the end-of-service award is calculated
The Saudi Labor Law gives a worker an award at the end of the contract, based on the last wage:
- Half a month's wage for each of the first five years of service.
- One month's wage for each year after the fifth.
- Part of a year counts in proportion, so 3 years and 6 months is 3.5 years.
Example: 8 years with a last wage of 8,000 SAR. First five years: 5 × 4,000 = 20,000. Next three years: 3 × 8,000 = 24,000. Full award: 44,000 SAR.
What counts as the wage
The law uses the actual wage: the basic salary plus fixed allowances such as housing and transport. Commissions and other variable pay can be left out if the contract says so. If your settlement uses the basic salary only, ask HR which allowances were included; this is the most common reason two calculations differ.
If you resign (Article 85)
| Service when you resign | Share of the award |
|---|---|
| Less than 2 years | Nothing |
| 2 to 5 years | One third |
| 5 to 10 years | Two thirds |
| 10 years or more | Full award |
The full award is still paid if you leave because of force majeure, or if a female worker resigns within six months of her marriage or within three months of giving birth (Article 87). It is also paid when the worker leaves because the employer did not meet its obligations (Article 81). A worker dismissed for one of the reasons in Article 80 gets no award.
Checking your final settlement
- Compare the service dates on your settlement with your contract and your GOSI record.
- Check which allowances were included in the wage.
- Check the reason code: "contract ended" and "resignation" give very different amounts.
- Long unpaid leave may not count as service; check how many days were excluded.
If the numbers still do not match, ask HR for their calculation sheet. For disputes, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development offers official guidance on the end-of-service award and a labor dispute service.
