How to get an image under 100 KB (or any size)

Forms for visas, job applications and government portals often demand a photo under a limit like 50 KB, 100 KB or 200 KB. Type the limit in "target size": the tool tries different quality levels and keeps the best one that fits. If even the lowest quality is too big, choose a smaller max width, because pixels matter more than quality for file size.

Which format should I use?

  • JPG: photos. Small files, no transparency.
  • WebP: websites. Usually 25-35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and it supports transparency. All current browsers show it.
  • PNG: screenshots, logos and images with text or sharp edges. Lossless, so quality settings do not apply and files stay larger.

Why resizing helps most

A 12-megapixel phone photo is about 4000 × 3000 pixels. A website or WhatsApp rarely shows more than 1920 pixels across. Resizing to 1920 wide removes about three quarters of the pixels before compression even starts, which is why "Max width" often shrinks a 4 MB photo to 300 KB with no visible difference.

Is quality lost?

JPG and WebP are "lossy": they drop detail the eye barely notices. At 70-80% quality most photos look the same as the original. Below about 50% you start to see blocks around edges. Keep your original file and send the compressed copy.

iPhone photos (HEIC)

iPhones save photos as HEIC, which most browsers cannot open. Change the iPhone setting to "Most Compatible" (Settings → Camera → Formats), or share the photo as JPG first.

How do I compress an image to 100 KB?
Choose the image, type 100 in "target size (KB)", and download. If it still does not fit, pick a smaller max width.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser using your device's own image tools. Nothing leaves your computer or phone.
Can I compress many images at once?
Yes, up to 30 at a time, with a "Download all" button.
Why did my PNG not get smaller?
PNG is lossless, so the quality slider does not apply. Convert it to JPG or WebP, or reduce the max width.
