Grade Calculator (Weighted) + Final Exam Grade Needed

Type each assignment with its score and weight. Scores can be a percent (87), points (43/50) or a letter (B+). You get your current grade, the letter and 4.0 GPA, and below it the score you need on the final to reach the grade you want.

What do I need on the final exam?

How a weighted grade is calculated

Most courses do not count every assignment the same. The syllabus gives each category a weight: homework 20%, quizzes 15%, midterm 25%, project 15%, final exam 25%. Your course grade is the sum of each score multiplied by its weight, divided by the total weight:

Weighted grade = (score₁ × weight₁ + score₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)

With the example in the calculator: (92 × 20 + 85 × 15 + 78 × 25 + 90 × 15) ÷ 75 = 85.53%. Dividing by 75 instead of 100 is what makes this your grade so far: the final exam (the missing 25%) has not happened yet. When all the weights add up to 100, the result is the final course grade.

If you leave every weight empty, the calculator gives each row the same weight, which is the right method when the teacher simply averages all scores. Points work too: type 43/50 and it becomes 86%. Letters are converted to the middle of their band (B+ = 88.5%), so use percentages when you have them.

The final exam formula

To find the score you need on the final, start from the grade you want and remove the part you have already earned:

Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final exam weight as a decimal.

Example: you have 84% going in, the final is worth 25% and you want 90%. Needed = (90 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 108%. That is above 100, so an A- is out of reach without extra credit; the best possible result is 88% with a perfect final. The table under the answer shows the course grade for every final exam score from 50% to 100%, so you can see what a realistic result does to your grade.

Letter grades and GPA

The letter and GPA use the most common US 4.0 scale: A 93-100, A- 90-92.99, B+ 87-89.99, B 83-86.99, B- 80-82.99, C+ 77-79.99, C 73-76.99, C- 70-72.99, D+ 67-69.99, D 63-66.99, D- 60-62.99, F below 60. A+ counts as 4.0 here; some universities give 4.3. Many schools use a different scale (10-point bands, no plus/minus, or 4.0 only above 94), so check your syllabus. The percentage is always correct; only the letter depends on the scale.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging category averages without weights. If homework is 10% and exams 60%, a simple average of the two gives homework six times too much influence.
  • Mixing points and percent in one category. 18/20 and 45/50 are 90% and 90%; adding the points (63/70) gives the same here, but not when the totals differ a lot. Use the method your teacher uses.
  • Weights that add up to more than 100. The calculator scales them proportionally and tells you; usually it means a category was typed twice.
  • Dropped lowest scores. If the lowest quiz is dropped, leave it out of the table.

FAQ

How do I calculate my grade with weights?
Multiply each score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the sum of the weights. Homework 92% (20%), midterm 78% (25%): (92×20 + 78×25) ÷ 45 = 83.6%.
What score do I need on my final to get an A?
Use: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, with w the final weight as a decimal. With 88% now, a 30% final and a 93% target: (93 − 88 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 104.7%, so an A is not reachable without extra credit.
What is a B+ in percent?
On the common US scale a B+ is 87 to 89.99%. Schools differ; the letter is only a label on top of the percentage.
Does the calculator work with points instead of percent?
Yes. Type the score as points, for example 43/50, and it is converted to 86%. Weights are still entered as percent of the course.
What if my weights do not add up to 100?
Below 100 means part of the course is not graded yet: the result is your grade so far and the remaining weight is filled into the final exam calculator. Above 100, the weights are scaled down proportionally.
