Hours and minutes vs decimal hours
Time does not add like normal numbers: 7:45 plus 8:30 is 16:15, not 15.75. Payroll systems often want decimal hours, where 15 minutes is 0.25 and 45 minutes is 0.75. To convert, divide the minutes by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. The calculator shows both formats so you can copy whichever your timesheet needs.
Common conversions
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 6 | 0.10 |
| 15 | 0.25 |
| 20 | 0.33 |
| 30 | 0.50 |
| 40 | 0.67 |
| 45 | 0.75 |
Shifts that cross midnight
For a night shift, pick the real dates in "Time between two times": 22:00 on Monday to 06:30 on Tuesday is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8 hours after a 30-minute break. Using dates avoids the classic mistake of getting a negative number.
What you can type as a duration
2:30 (hours:minutes), 1:02:03 (with seconds), 7.5 (decimal hours), 90m, 45 mins, 3 hrs, 2 hours 30 minutes, 1d 4h. Put a minus in front to subtract a line in the timesheet list.
