Word to PDF Converter

Open a .docx file, check the preview, and save it as a PDF. The document is laid out on your own device, so contracts, CVs and letters are never uploaded anywhere.

How it works

Most online converters upload your Word file to a server, open it there and send back a PDF. This one does the same job inside your browser: it reads the .docx file, lays out each page with its fonts, tables, images, headers and footers, shows you the result, and then uses your browser's built-in "Save as PDF" to write the file. Because the browser writes the PDF, the text in it is real text: it can be searched, copied and read by screen readers, and right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Urdu are kept.

Step by step

  1. Choose the .docx file. A preview of the pages appears below the button.
  2. Scroll through the preview. If it looks right, press "Save as PDF".
  3. In the print window, set the destination to Save as PDF (Chrome, Edge, Android) or PDF → Save as PDF (Mac Safari). On iPhone, tap Share → Print, then Share again → Save to Files.
  4. Set Margins to None or Default and switch off "Headers and footers" so the browser does not add the date and a web address to each page. Then save.

What converts well, and what does not

Converts wellMay look different from Word
Letters, CVs, contracts, reports, offer lettersText boxes, shapes and SmartArt
Headings, bold, colours, lists, tables, imagesCharts (they appear as the picture Word saved, or not at all)
Headers and footers, page size and marginsPage numbers in fields and a table of contents
Arabic, Urdu and other right-to-left textFonts you do not have on this device (a similar font is used)

Pages break where Word broke them the last time the file was saved. A file made by another program (Google Docs, LibreOffice, a website that exports .docx) may not carry that information, so its pages can break at slightly different places. Always look through the preview before you save. If the layout must be exact to the millimetre, for example a form with fixed boxes, use Word's own File → Save As → PDF.

Old .doc files and passwords

The old Word 97-2003 format (.doc) cannot be read in the browser. Open it in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and save it as .docx first. A document protected with an open password has to be opened in Word and saved without the password.

Privacy

The document is read by docx-preview, an open-source library, entirely on your device. It is not uploaded to HeadsNTail or anywhere else. We count only that a Word file was converted and roughly how many pages it had, never the file name or its contents.

FAQ

How do I convert a Word document to PDF for free?
Choose the .docx file here, check the preview, press Save as PDF and pick "Save as PDF" as the destination in the print window. It is free and needs no account.
Will the PDF look exactly like my Word file?
Normal documents (letters, CVs, reports with tables and images) look the same. Text boxes, shapes, charts and automatic page numbers can differ, so check the preview first.
Is the text in the PDF selectable?
Yes. The browser writes real text, so it can be searched and copied, including Arabic and Urdu.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
Not directly. Save it as .docx in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs first, then convert it here.
Is my document uploaded?
No. It is opened and laid out in your browser and never leaves your device.
